The Mayan culture is such that the people are very slow to accept outsiders. Amor en Acción’s approach to being welcomed and accepted by the Mayan’s is to provide much needed services through various programs such as providing meals to the municipal dump workers, sponsoring children, installing ecological stoves, installing water filters, etc. Through these programs, Amor en Acción shares the Gospel every time they visit a home in the Mayan communities. Since the start of Amor en Acción, approximately 200 people have professed their faith in Jesus.
For new believers, Amor en Acción has the opportunity to follow-up with them each time they visit the sponsored children and their families, take hot meals to the workers at the dump, stop by to make sure water filters and stoves are operating properly, or deliver the next truck load of water. Each of these visits provides an opportunity for Amor en Acción to tell new believers more about Jesus and answer any questions they may have about their new faith.
“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession
and thanksgiving be made for all people” (1 Timothy. 2:1 NIV)
Amor en Acción began its mission in 2018 when God called Vinny and Fabi to serve the aproximately 100 people who work at the Xela Municipal Dump collecting recyclables, which they sell to earn a very meager living. During each visit, the Love of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ is shared with the workers, and they are served a hot, nutritious meal. The workers are also provided with basic needs such as clothing and other donated items. Regular and consistent visits have opened opportunities to pray with individuals and learn about their needs and concerns. Through this program, Amor en Acción can share the love and hope available through a relationship with Jesus.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I
was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a
stranger and you invited me in.” (Matthew 25:35 NIV)
In 2019, a member of a visiting mission team felt a special connection with a little girl at one of the Mayan schools. A few weeks after the trip, she decided to sponsor this little girl. It was not known then, that this would become a significant part of Amor en Acción’s ongoing ministry. Today, there are almost 70 sponsored children who receive love and care from their Godparents. Through these sponsorships, children receive monthly deliveries of nutritional food, clothing & shoes, and many have received beds so they no longer have to share with multiple siblings or sleep on the ground.
“Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my
name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not
welcome me but the one who sent me.” (Mark 9:37 NIV).
Most of the communities served by Amor en Acción do not have safe drinking water. Amor en Acción helps in this area by installing water filters that provide access to clean water, free of parasites and bacteria. The water filters can filter up to 150 gallons per day and the filter can last up to 10 years if it is properly cleaned and maintained. During installation of each water filter, Amor en Acción shares the “living water” available through Jesus Christ with the family and, in many instances, their neighbors. This is a wonderful opportunity for them to receive Jesus as the Lord and Savior of their lives.
One of the Mayan communities, Tierra Colorada Alta, does not have running water in their homes. During the rainy season, the residents collect rain from their roofs to use for drinking, bathing, cooking, and washing clothes. With the help of generous donors, Amor en Acción has been able to provide water tanks for collecting the rain during the rainy season and is blessed to be able to arrange for water deliveries during the dry season.
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of
living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38 NIV)
Many of the people served by Amor en Acción cook inside their homes using stoves that are inefficient and are not vented to the outside. As a result, there are numerous respiratory problems affecting primarily mothers and children. The moms carry their babies on their backs while they cook, which exposes their babies to the smoke and fumes. Through the donations of our many contributors, Amor en Acción has been able to install more than 50 ecological stoves. With each new stove installed, the family is no longer inhaling smoke and they save money because these efficient stoves use less wood. During the installation process, Amor en Acción has the privilege to spend time with the family, establish relationships, pray with them, and share the good news of Jesus Christ.
“Do everything in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14 NIV)
Many of the families served by Amor en Acción live in very inferior homes. Mission teams have been blessed to be able to construct homes for some of the families. Building a home can only be accomplished with a mission team comprised of members with the appropriate skillset. If you would like to be part of a mission team to help build a home for a family in need, please contact David Mahler at d-mahler@hotmail.com or 814.521.8343.
“You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for
the needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm
and a shade from the heat. (Isaiah 26:4a NIV)
